Which African country has Portuguese as its official language?

Mozambique, along with Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Sao Tome - the residue of a Portuguese empire that arrived first in Africa and left last. Portugal held on through the 1960s and 70s fighting three simultaneous colonial wars, which bankrupted it and eventually produced a coup at home rather than a defeat abroad.

Portuguese is a minority mother tongue in Mozambique and the language of government, schooling and the courts, which is the usual awkward inheritance - it belongs to nobody locally and therefore favours nobody, and it also excludes most of the rural population from official life. Around forty languages are spoken there, with Makhuwa the largest.

The flag says a good deal about how independence went. Mozambique is the only country whose flag features a modern assault rifle - an AK-47 with a bayonet, crossed with a hoe over an open book - adopted after a war of independence and kept through a civil war that ran to 1992 and killed perhaps a million people. There have been repeated parliamentary attempts to remove the rifle and it is still there.
