Which is the world's highest waterfall?

Angel Falls in Venezuela, at 979 metres - so tall that in the dry season much of the water never reaches the bottom as water at all, breaking into mist partway down and falling as heavy drizzle around the base.

It drops off the edge of Auyantepui, one of the tepuis: flat-topped sandstone plateaus rising sheer out of the forest, remnants of a surface that has been eroding for perhaps two billion years. Because their summits have been isolated from the ground for so long, each tends to carry its own species found nowhere else, and they are the landscape that gave Conan Doyle the setting for The Lost World.

The English name is not Venezuela's. It commemorates Jimmie Angel, an American pilot who landed on the plateau in 1937 looking for gold, bogged his aircraft in the soft ground, and walked out over eleven days - the plane sat there for thirty-three years. In 2009 Hugo Chavez ordered the official name changed to Kerepakupai Meru, on the reasonable argument that the falls did not need discovering by anyone; both names remain in use.
