What is the main language of Mexico?

Spanish, spoken by nearly everyone - and Mexico has more Spanish speakers than any other country, roughly twice as many as Spain. It is also not the official language, because Mexico has no official language: a 2003 law recognises Spanish and 68 indigenous languages equally as national languages.

Those 68 are not dialects and not remnants. Nahuatl, the language of the Aztec empire, still has well over a million speakers; Yucatec Maya has around 800,000. Between them the indigenous languages have around seven million speakers, and many of the speakers are monolingual, which is a live problem when the courts and hospitals operate in Spanish.

Mexican Spanish also carries the older languages inside it. Chocolate, tomato, avocado, chilli, coyote and shack all come through Nahuatl into Spanish and then into English, which means everyone reading this uses Aztec vocabulary regularly. The place names are the same story: Mexico itself is Nahuatl, as are Oaxaca, Chiapas and the Popocatepetl volcano, whose name means smoking mountain.
