Which novel features the character Atticus Finch?

To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1960, and Harper Lee published nothing else for fifty-five years. The novel won the Pulitzer, sold tens of millions, and became one of the most taught books in American schools while its author gave almost no interviews and lived quietly in Alabama.

It was heavily shaped by an editor. Lee arrived with a manuscript called Go Set a Watchman, and Tay Hohoff spent two years working with her to rebuild it around the childhood flashbacks - which is how the finished book acquired its narrator, a six-year-old looking back. Lee had also just spent months in Kansas helping Truman Capote, a childhood neighbour, research In Cold Blood, doing much of the interviewing that Kansans would not do with him.

The 2015 publication of Watchman was genuinely troubling and remains contested. It is the earlier draft, in which an adult Scout returns home to find Atticus attending a segregationist council - which readers experienced as the destruction of a moral hero, though it is not a sequel but the rejected first version. Lee was 88, in a care home after a stroke, her sister and lifelong protector had died months earlier, and whether she was capable of consenting to publication was investigated by the state of Alabama.
