Which country is home to the Serengeti?

Tanzania, with the ecosystem continuing north into Kenya as the Masai Mara - it is one system split by a colonial border, which is why the animals cross it and the management does not. The name is from the Maasai siringet, roughly the place where the land runs on forever.

The migration is the largest movement of land mammals on Earth: something like 1.3 million wildebeest with several hundred thousand zebra and gazelle, moving in a rough annual circuit following the rain. It is not a journey with a destination but a continuous loop, and it is genuinely ancient - it depends on volcanic soils from Ngorongoro producing grass rich enough in calcium and phosphorus for lactating females on the southern plains.

Its creation had a cost that is now acknowledged more openly than it once was. The Maasai were moved out of the Serengeti in the 1950s to create the national park, on a model of wilderness conservation that assumed people and wildlife could not coexist - despite the landscape having been grazed and burned by pastoralists for centuries and arguably shaped by them. Evictions and restrictions around the wider ecosystem have continued into the present, and are contested in court and in the international press.
