Because faces are processed as wholes rather than as lists of features. A dedicated region of the brain handles them, and it deals in the overall configuration - the relationships between eyes, nose and mouth - which is enormously fast and almost impossible to put into words.
The evidence is neat. Faces are far harder to recognise upside down than any other object, because inverting them defeats the configural system and forces you to work feature by feature. The Thatcher illusion makes the point brutally: invert the eyes and mouth within an upside-down face and it looks unremarkable, then turn the picture the right way up and it is grotesque.
Damage to that region produces prosopagnosia, face blindness, in which vision and intelligence are intact but faces mean nothing - sufferers navigate by voice, gait and hairstyle, and some cannot recognise themselves. It runs in families and affects perhaps one person in fifty. Describing a face in words being so hard is also why police composite images are notoriously poor, and why identification from a lineup is far less reliable than juries assume.
