Who was the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize?

Malala Yousafzai, in 2014, at seventeen. She had been shot in the head at fifteen by a gunman who boarded her school bus and asked for her by name, after years of campaigning for girls' education in the Swat valley - which she had begun at eleven, writing an anonymous diary for the BBC Urdu service.

She shared the prize with Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian campaigner against child labour - a Pakistani Muslim girl and an Indian Hindu man, which the committee said explicitly was part of the point. She was flown to Birmingham for surgery, recovered, and finished her schooling and then a degree at Oxford in England, unable to return home safely.

The reception in Pakistan has been more complicated than the international coverage suggests. She is a national hero to many and, to others, a figure associated with Western attention and criticism of the country - a private schools federation once banned her book. She has been consistent about the thing she was shot for: that the fight is over whether girls sit in classrooms, which in much of the world is still an open question rather than a settled one.
