Who was the Greek goddess of wisdom?

Athena, who was born from Zeus's head - fully grown and armoured, after he swallowed her pregnant mother Metis on a warning that her child would overthrow him. Hephaestus split his skull open with an axe to let her out, which is the sort of detail that gets softened in retellings.

She is wisdom in a specific sense: strategy, craft and applied skill rather than contemplation. She is the goddess of weaving, pottery and shipbuilding as much as of war, and where Ares represents the violence of battle she represents winning it - which is why the Greeks had two war deities and thought considerably more of hers.

The Parthenon was built for her and held a twelve-metre statue of ivory and gold that has been lost entirely. Athens is named after her, from the contest with Poseidon in which he produced a salt spring and she produced an olive tree and the city chose the olive - a founding myth in which a people explicitly prefer agriculture and trade to naval power, told by the state that then built the largest navy in Greece.
