Who choreographed and composed the ballet The Rite of Spring's score?

Stravinsky wrote the score; Nijinsky did the choreography. Its premiere in Paris in 1913 produced something close to a riot - shouting, whistling, fighting in the aisles, and the dancers unable to hear the orchestra, so Nijinsky stood in the wings screaming the counts at them.

What caused it is argued about. The music is genuinely violent - irregular metres changing bar to bar, dissonance that had no precedent, and an opening bassoon solo pitched so high that players said it was unplayable. But the choreography may have been the bigger provocation: turned-in feet, stamping, hunched bodies, everything ballet had been built to avoid, in a piece about a girl dancing herself to death as a sacrifice.

It was performed a handful of times and the original choreography was lost for seventy years, reconstructed in the 1980s from notes, drawings and interviews with people who had seen it. The music, meanwhile, was accepted almost immediately - a concert performance a year later got an ovation, and it is now among the most recorded scores of the century. Disney put it in Fantasia against dinosaurs, and Stravinsky, who was paid five thousand dollars and had no legal grounds to object, called the result execrable.
