Which is the only venomous primate?

The slow loris, which produces a toxin from a gland on its upper arm, licks it, and mixes it with saliva - so the venom is delivered by a bite from a mouth loaded with it. It also raises its arms above its head in a posture that looks like surrender and is a warning.

The bite causes severe pain and in humans can produce anaphylaxis; there are documented deaths. What it is for is not settled - the leading proposals are defence against predators, competition with other lorises, and parasite control, and bite wounds between lorises in the wild suggest intraspecific fighting is a substantial part of it.

The animal is being destroyed by finding it cute. Videos of lorises apparently enjoying being tickled - the raised-arms posture is in fact the defensive one - drove enormous demand for them as pets, and the trade involves clipping or pulling out the teeth with pliers without anaesthetic so they cannot bite, which frequently kills them. Every species is threatened, and conservationists have spent a decade asking platforms to remove the videos.
