Which English county is Stonehenge in?

Wiltshire, on Salisbury Plain, and the monument everyone photographs is the last of several. The site began around 3000 BC as a circular ditch and bank with cremation burials - it was a cemetery for centuries before the big stones arrived, and it may be the largest late Neolithic burial ground in Britain.

The stones come from two places and one of them is a genuine puzzle. The huge sarsens are local, from about 25 kilometres away. The smaller bluestones came from the Preseli hills in west Wales, some 250 kilometres off - and in 2021 archaeologists reported that a dismantled stone circle in Wales matches the Stonehenge bluestone settings closely enough to suggest an entire monument was taken down and moved, which would make it a relocation rather than a quarrying operation.

What it was for is unresolved and the honest answer is probably several things over 1,500 years of use. The solstice alignment is real and precise. Isotope analysis of animal bones from nearby Durrington Walls shows cattle and pigs brought from across Britain, and slaughtered mid-winter, which points to large seasonal gatherings. Recent theories about it being a place of healing, or a monument to unify distant communities through the act of building it together, are argued from the same evidence.
