Which Carthaginian general was Hannibal's father?

Hamilcar Barca, who fought Rome to a standstill in Sicily in the First Punic War and was undefeated in the field when Carthage sued for peace over his head - which is a reasonable explanation for how the family felt about the settlement.

The oath is the story everyone knows. Hannibal, at about nine, is said to have been taken by his father to an altar and made to swear eternal enmity to Rome before being allowed to accompany him to Spain. Hannibal himself reportedly told the story to a Seleucid king decades later, which is as good as ancient sourcing gets.

Hamilcar built the Spanish base that made the Second Punic War possible - silver mines, recruitment, a territory answerable to his family rather than to Carthage. He drowned in a river during a campaign there when Hannibal was eighteen. The Barcids are also probably why Barcelona has its name, from a family settlement, and the war Hamilcar's son then fought came closer to destroying Rome than anything until the fifth century.
