In which sport would you see a googly?

Cricket. A googly is a delivery from a leg-spin bowler that turns the opposite way to the one his action advertises - the hand comes over and the ball, which the batsman reads as breaking away, breaks in. It is a lie told with the wrist.

It was invented around 1900 by Bernard Bosanquet, who developed it playing a table game called Twisti-Twosti, trying to bounce a tennis ball past an opponent across a table. It is still called a bosie in Australia. When he first used it in a match the reaction was closer to outrage than admiration - there was a genuine argument about whether it was within the spirit of the game.

Cricket's vocabulary is famously impenetrable and mostly descriptive once decoded: a googly, a doosra, a flipper, silly mid-on, a nightwatchman, a maiden over. The doosra is the mirror image for an off-spinner, developed in Pakistan in the 1990s, and it caused a decade of argument about whether it can be bowled at all without illegally straightening the arm - which led to laboratory testing of bowling actions and a permitted tolerance of fifteen degrees.
